Julia Rich aka Zeke's Lunchbox is a Sydney based artist whose paintings of kitsch, cute, psychedelic, erotic and grotesque fantastical creatures and beguiling interplanatary ladies are pure candy for the senses. Believe it or not, she's only been painting for 5 years and is self taught. In that time, her work has taken her to far flung places and spaces in the areas of print, fashion, music and of course, gallery walls.
The first time I saw Julia's art, I was drawn into her worlds, much like one is drawn into the imaginary places and faces created by Femke Hiemstra, Mark Dryden or Mab Graves.
I love that Julia isn't precious or poe faced about her art. That's not to say she doesn't take the work seriously, but she manages to display a healthy sense of fun and humour
in both her work and in real life. I fired off a few questions her way this week and
here were her responses:
What was the last movie you watched and who was it with?
Holy Mountain with my partner, it's a movie I've been dying to see for years! So pumped to finally tick that one off.
Is painting something you think you’ll always do?
Most definitely, I love it too much to stop. It's unlike any other interest I've had.
How do you overcome a creative block?
Try to consume culture off the internet. Seeing other people's creative journeys and their success always fulfills mine.
Favourite subject/object to paint?
Cute/weird creatures and girls, girls, girls.
What’s more important, short term innovation or creative longevity?
A bit of both, for me it's about the gradual process and discovering things along the way.
Is your art an extension of yourself or is it another side of you?
Oh this one is good! I think of my art as a persona, so it's definitely an old creature being pulled out of me.
What do your family think of your art?
They like it and try their best to "understand" it. They're very supportive!
What was the first song that had an impact on you as a child?
Name another artist you admire
Shintaro Kago is incredible!
What is the thing you can cook better than anyone you know?
Pretty much nothing, I'm a really average cook! :P
